Gourds

Morohunmubo’s thought-provoking and innovative use of Nigerian gourds as a canvas masterfully intersects preservation and climate discourse. The artistic interpretation brings together tradition and modernity in a contemporary context, while the installation is designed to invite reflection and engagement within the space. An awakening of environmental consciousness and climate change awareness are meant to occur during dynamic interactions with the gourds.

Historically gourds have played a vital role in Nigerian culture whilst representing a center of shared cultural memory. They were once vital vessels in Nigerian daily life symbolizing preservation of identity, nature and tradition but now serve as poignant symbols of the fragility of human existence in the face of environmental degradation. Using an abstract representation of prolific colours, carefully crafted in brush strokes, controlled pours and splashes with mixed media, Morohunmubo vividly depicts some of the devastating impacts of climate change on our environment.

Representations of climate effects—such as desertification, flooding, water scarcity, food insecurity, and migration—are frequently depicted on repurposed organic vessels, underscoring the urgent issue of climate change. The distinctive forms and textures of gourds exemplify the remarkable artistry inherent in nature. Morohunmubo’s work draws upon the cultural significance of gourds in Nigeria to highlight the complex relationship between humanity and the environment. Her artistic practice not only preserves the cultural heritage of the gourd but also encourages meaningful discourse regarding the necessity of sustainability. Through her art, Morohunmubo effectively underscores the importance of honouring our connection with nature and the essential resources it provides. The vivid portrayal of gourds skilfully illustrates the interconnectedness of human existence, ecological systems, and environmental challenges.

By emphasizing the critical need for sustainability and climate action, Morohunmubos  artwork reaffirms the enduring symbolism of the gourd as a representation of resilience and hope. It serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of respecting our relationship with nature and the vessels that sustain us.
